Lowcountry Calendar

It’s nearly impossible to compile a comprehensive list of the activities planned in the Lowcountry, but here is an overview of highlights. Please check all information to make sure it’s still current before making plans. Ongoing Activities

Farmer’s Market, featuring fresh baked goods and vine ripened fruits and vegetables, takes place every Saturday at East Bay Park in Georgetown (April -Nov) and every Wednesday at Parkersville Park in Pawleys Island (April -Nov) from 9 AM until 1 PM. For more information, call Jamie at 545-9451.

Howard Movie House. Every Wednesday
in the summer, kids can take a break from the heat and enjoy a movie on the BIG screen at Howard Recreation Center located in Georgetown! Different features each week; refreshments available at the concession stand. Wed., 10 AM and 1 PM, free, 545-9451.

Brookgreen Gardens, a National Historic Landmark
and non-profit organization, containing the Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington Sculpture Garden with more than 550 works of American sculpture and the Lowcountry History and Wildlife Preserve, is located on U.S. 17 between Myrtle Beach and Pawleys Island, South Carolina. Creek Excursions, aboard the Springfield pontoon boat, will be offered daily. Cool Summer Evenings, through
mid Aug., Wed.-Fri., 5-9 PM.

Come for dinner and stay for the show when Brookgreen offers live entertainment and evening cruises down the creeks in the cool of the summer evenings. Gardens open 9:30 AM-5 PM, $12 (adults 13-64), $10 (seniors 65+), $5 (children 6-12), free (children 5 and under); entertainment included, excursions additional. 235-6000 or www.brookgreen.org.

Tours of Hobcaw Barony are offered Tues.- Fri. for an educational and enlightening van tour of the Plantation, including the Hobcaw House, Friendfield Village and various habitats of the coastal plantation, 9:30 AM-12:30 PM. $20 per person, reservations required. Hopsewee Plantation’s “Attic to Cellar” tour is held Mon.-Fri. from 10 AM-4 PM and Sat., 12-4 PM. Tea room open Mon.- Sat., 12-4 PM. Basketweaving classes every Thurs. Rotating exhibits each month. $10 per person, children 5-17, $5. Reservations requested for groups of 10 or more. Huntington Beach State Park is open daily from 6 AM-10 PM. Tues.-Sun., the Education Center is open from 10 AM-5 PM, with a variety of Coastal Exploration programs scheduled at no additional charge. Each month’s programs are posted on the website. Admission is $5/adult; $3.25/SC senior; $3/ages 6-15; free for ages 5 and under. 235-8755 or www.SouthCarolinaParks.com.

Coastal Kayaking at Huntington Beach State Park. Enjoy a two-hour guided tour of the salt marsh. Excellent for beginners. Meet at the Education Center, then caravan to Oyster Landing. Every Mon., 10 AM-12 PM, weather permitting through October, under age 16 accompanied by an adult, advance reservations required by 4 PM on prior Sunday, 235-8755.

Atalaya Ghost Tour at Huntington Beach State Park. Hear the haunted tales of coastal folklore as you are guided through the halls of the Atalaya castle on a one-hour tour. Bring a flashlight. Fri., 8:30-9:30 PM, free with park admission, 235-8755.

Black River Outdoors Center offers kayak tours for a great way to become familiar with the saltwater marshes, plantation creeks and canals, cypress-tupelo swamps, and blackwater rivers of the Lowcountry. Half-Day Naturalist-Guided Kayak Tours are scheduled mornings throughout the week.

Historic Georgetown Harbor Kayak Tours are scheduled Tuesday through Thursday at 6 PM. Moonlight Kayak Tours are scheduled during the summer months into the early fall. The tour schedule is posted on their website at BlackRiverOutdoors.com. Advance reservations at least one day in advance, Mon.-Sat., 9 AM-5:30 PM (closed Sunday) at 546-4840.

Sewee Visitor and Environmental Education Center, a joint venture of the Francis Marion National Forest and Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge on Hwy 17 in Awendaw, is open Tues.-Sat. from 9 AM-5 PM. CLASS (CLASS (Community Learning About Special Subjects) offers short courses in Tai chi, MyGroup, Spiritual Law, August oil painting workshop with Gloria Perkins, November Island Time Girls Getaway at Sea View Inn, and The Moveable Feast (Friday literary luncheons) during the summer and fall. 235-9600 or www.classatpawleys.com.

OLLI at Coastal Carolina University offers The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute during the summer and fall at the Waccamaw Higher Education Center in Litchfield, at the Foundation Center in Conway, and the Myrtle Beach Education Center at 79th Avenue North with courses and workshops in computers, art, photography, history, music, literature and creative writing, performance training and personal growth. Waccamaw Nature Photography Centre at Litchfield Beach offers monthly photography workshops and excursions. Classes are limited to 12 participants and run from 8 AM-7 PM each day. For topics and fees, call 467-0774 or www.waccamawnaturephotography.com.

Island Knits offers on-going knitting lessons are Wednesdays, 5-7 PM and Saturdays, 10 AM-12 PM. Lessons are $5/hr. Whether you want to learn to knit, forgot how to knit or need help starting or finishing a project. Sit-n- Knit on Tuesdays from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM – just come in, sit, talk and maybe knit a little, maybe even get the latest restaurant reviews.

The Coastal Ski & Outing Club meets at 6:30 PM the 2nd Tuesday of each month year round at various sites. For more information and each month’s meeting location, 222-5720 or 222-3693 or www.coastalskiclub.com.

Winyah Sierra Club for Horry- Georgetown County meets at 11:30 AM the 1st Monday of each month at Applewood House of Pancakes, Litchfield, 237-1387.

Pawleys Island Bridge Club offers bridge courses and weekly games at the Pawleys Island Senior Center on Parkersville Road. Taught by Pete Peterson, an American Contract Bridge League Master and certified teacher, open stratified games are held Tuesdays at 7 PM and Fridays at 10:15 AM. 237-8243 or www.pawleysislandbridgeclub. com.

Grand Strand Bicycle Rides. Meet at the Grand Strand Bicycle Shop in Murrells Inlet at 11824 Hwy 17 Bypass for a group bicycle ride. Slower & intermediate riders can meet at the shop at 6 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 1 1/2 hour ride. Fast riders can meet at the shop at 7:30 AM on Saturdays for a 30-mile 2-hour fast ride. Surf the Earth, Pawleys Island, offers surf lessons and week-long camps, paddleboard lessons, clinics and tours, kayak clinics, tours and guided fishing trips in the Pawleys Island and Litchfield Beach areas. Surfboard, paddleboard and kayak rentals and sales, as well as a full line of clothing, gear and accessories. Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort. Just because you’re on vacation, doesn’t mean you can’t keep up your fitness routine! Try a drop-in water aerobics class, Mondays- Saturdays, 8:30-9:30 AM. Or work out in the cardio- and free-weight rooms. Swim a few laps, enjoy a round robin of Jacuzzi, Steam and Sauna, and you’re ready for a fine meal at Webster’s! Or check out the Bike Depot, rent bicycles for the family and take a healthy ride on the Waccamaw Neck Bikeway.
